The Titanic Lifeboats

This Titanic lifeboats reference was created by John M. Hennessey of Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Hennessey, 44, was copy chief for the Reading Times at the time of his death in 1998.

He was also an avid model railroader.

Hennessey maintained this list as a personal hobby and recognized that, while additional Titanic survivor information will likely be found, the list will never be complete.

According to the most generally accepted figures cited by Walter Lord, 705 people were saved among 1,316 passengers and 891 crew. Eaton and Haas note 214 crew were rescued. That number subtracted from the 705 total leaves 491 passengers saved.

Data are listed according to boat, then by class. For passengers, full names, ages and residences are provided, when available. Also, relations to other survivors or to the lost are noted, if known, but no notation is made for obvious marital or parental ties. Residences are given by state for U.S. citizens, province for Canadians and nation for all others, when available. For crew, names, ages and positions aboard ship are listed, if known; few ages are available. No residences are given since most crew members were from the United Kingdom. Other details are provided where deemed appropriate within the context of this work

SPECIAL NOTES:

A. Third-class passenger Daniel Buckley might have been on Boat 4, as he recounted sneaking aboard a boat and being covered with a shawl by Mrs. Astor, enabling him to pose as a woman and thus keep his seat. Other accounts identify him as the young man with a shawl Cmdr. Lowe discovered when shuffling passengers among several boats. Boat 4 was among these. Because of the Lowe connection, some accounts, including Butler’s, list Mr. Buckley in Boat 14. Findlay gives no boat number.

B. Second-class passenger Masafumi Hosono is on Findlay’s list has having been in Boat 13, but the latter-day discovery of a letter by Mr. Hosono indicates he was in Boat 10. Mr. Hosono, who was disgraced in his country for having escaped the disaster, wrote that he jumped into a boat and in no way acted dishonorably. In Japan, it seems, jumping into a lifeboat is considered less dishonorable than accepting an officer’s invitation to board one, as it was thought Mr. Hosono had done. The Associated Press transmitted an article about Mr. Hosono and his letter on Dec. 19, 1997. Findlay was quoted therein.

C. Senior wireless operator John “Jack” Phillips may or may not have been aboard Boat B. Some accounts say so, others are uncertain.

D. Second-class passenger Elizabeth Hocking was traveling with son Samuel Hocking, daughters Ellen Hocking and Emily Richards, and grandsons William Richards and George Richards, Emily’s sons. All escaped on Boat 13, except Samuel, who was lost, according to a latter-day interview with William’s widow in the video “Titanic Remembered. ”The often-unreliable Moblay(pp. 208-209) provides other evidence in Emily’s 1912 account of her family’s experience. She describes the escape route they took, putting them in the vicinity of the aft lifeboats, and recalls having to climb through “portholes” to board. Boat 13 was among the few lowered from A Deck, and passengers had to climb through the rectangular promenade openings, rather than portholes, to reach these. Findlay lists no boat numbers for the family.

LOOSE ENDS:

AMERICAN INQUIRY:

Dr. F.C. Quintran in second class?

Many thanks to John M. Feeney for the following insight, offered on January 23, 2003:

"In all likelihood, this actually refers to 'Dr. F. C. QUITZRAU,' who was indeed a Second Class passenger at the time, but NOT aboard Titanic.

"Quitzrau was the Toronto physician on the Mount Temple who insisted -- based largely on hearsay -- that the Mount Temple had been in the near vicinity of the White Star liner, and had ignored her rockets. (In fact, if any rockets were observed around the times given by Quitzrau in his affidavit to the U.S. Inquiry [Day 15], they were undoubtedly Carpathia's!)

"I checked Encyclopedia Titanica's passenger lists, and there are no 'Q' passengers listed for 2nd Cabin at all.

"So 'Quintran' probably isn't really a mystery, just an outsider who put in his two cents during the U.S. Hearings." -- John M. Feeney
